Fact Sheet: Bulk Site Upload Explained

A full breakdown of bulk site uploads, covering what it does, supported file formats, how to prepare your files, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Updated this week

What is bulk site uploads?

Bulk site uploads lets you add multiple sites to your LandInsight pipeline at once by uploading a KML or Shapefile. Rather than searching and saving sites one by one, you can bring an entire list across in a single upload, with all sites mapped to their precise locations and immediately available for assessment.

It is particularly useful when:

  • Migrating sites from another GIS platform such as Google Earth, SearchLand, or an internal system

  • Importing a batch of sites prepared by your team

  • Adding a large number of known opportunities to your pipeline at the start of a new project

How to access it

  • Go to Sites in the top navigation bar

  • Click Upload sites in the top right corner of the screen

  • Select the pipeline stage you want to assign your sites to

  • Drag and drop your file, or click Select File to browse

  • Click Add sites to pipeline

LandInsight will process the file and map all sites to their precise locations. Once complete, your sites appear in your chosen pipeline stage and are immediately ready to assess.

Supported file formats

Format

File requirements

KML

Single .kml file

Shapefile

Three files required: .shp, .dbf, and .prj

Important Shapefile note: all three files (.shp, .dbf, and .prj) must be included for the upload to work. Uploading only the .shp file will result in an invalid upload.

If you need to upload a different format such as KMZ, contact your account manager or our support team, as we may be able to accommodate your format.

File requirements and limits

  • Maximum file size: 100KB per file

  • One file per upload: you cannot upload multiple files at the same time

  • Area boundaries only: location markers and lines are not supported

  • No self-intersecting boundaries: site boundaries must not cross themselves

How sites are named after upload

LandInsight reads the site name directly from your file and applies it in your pipeline. To ensure your sites come through with clear, recognisable names, name them in your GIS platform before exporting.

How naming works:

  • If a site name is found in the file, that name is used in LandInsight

  • If no name is found, LandInsight falls back to the ownership address it holds on record for that parcel

  • If no address is available, the site will appear as 'Untitled polygon'

For KML files, the site name is stored in the <name> field. For Shapefiles, it is typically taken from the platform the file was exported from.

πŸ’‘ LandTech Tip: Check your file before uploading to confirm site names have been included. Renaming 'untitled polygon' sites after the fact takes significantly longer than naming them clearly at source.

If your upload does not work

Here are the most common reasons an upload might fail and how to resolve them:

File size too large The maximum file size is 100KB per file. If your file exceeds this, split it into smaller batches and upload them separately.

Wrong file type Only KML and Shapefile formats are currently supported. If you are using a different format, contact support.

Incomplete Shapefile Shapefiles require all three component files (.shp, .dbf, and .prj). If any are missing, the upload will fail.

Too many files selected Only one file can be uploaded at a time. If you are uploading a Shapefile, ensure all three component files are packaged correctly before uploading.

Invalid file If your file is corrupted or incomplete, check the file details in your GIS platform and re-export if needed.

No stage selected You must select a pipeline stage before uploading. The upload will not proceed without one.

General connection issue If you experience an unexpected error, try again. Most connection issues resolve on a second attempt.

Plan availability

Bulk site uploading is available to all LandInsight users.
