In this article we'll be walking you through our Power & Utilities insights. If you'd like to see them in action, watch our tutorial video below.

To get started, head to the Explore panel on the left and select 'Power & Utilities' from the layers drop-down. You'll see:

  • Power substations

  • Power Towers, Lines & Cables

  • Energy Projects

Power Substations

How can I tell if a substation has capacity?

Each substation is colour coded to show its RAG (red, amber, green) status, as supplied by the applicable DNO.

This data is not always available, so sometimes these will appear as 'unknown'.

  • Red: Low capacity

  • Amber: Medium capacity

  • Green: High capacity

Note: Generally speaking, UK Power Networks and Electricity North West don’t provide a RAG status for each individual substation. If you need to know capacity information for their substations, you'll need to contact them directly.

How can I find a specific substation?

Navigate to the area on the map where the substation you’re looking for is located, then use the filters (substation kV and RAG status) to find the one you need.

Once you’ve got a list of potential options that meet your requirements, you can click onto each one for more information about it, to help you find the perfect site.

What insights do you show?

You can find the status, type, and voltage range for each substation.

For additional data (including headroom), you can go ahead and download the more complete CSV document - hit 'view document' to do so.

Where does this data come from?

You can check our latest coverage using the '?' icon within the layer, in the explorer, on the left hand side.

Power Towers, Lines & Cables

This data is supplied by National Grid.

To view it, ensure you've checked each of the boxes next to the 'Power Towers, Lines & Cables' box in the Power & Utilities layer. You'll get:

  • an understanding of where you might be constrained by power infrastructure located on your site

  • an insight as to whether or not your site is within reach of infrastructure provided by National Grid for power purposes

What insights do these show?

You can view data from the National Grid, selecting ownership parcels on the map to find out whether any of these are located on your current site.

  • It includes where the towers, lines and cables are located

  • Some contain information on their primary and secondary routes

  • Operating voltages in kV

Filtering by voltage class

You can use the voltage class filters to narrow down the lines and cables you see on the map.

What do the tower types mean?

Where does this data come from?

You can check our latest coverage using the '?' icon within the layer, in the explorer, on the left hand side.
